Orange Essential Oil + DMSO: Uses and Benefits
August 15, 2020Have you ever been to Disneyland or World and experienced the ride Soarin'? It's a ride that takes you on an aerial adventure across California, and part of the virtual experience takes riders through a grove of orange trees. The fresh, realistic smell of oranges ranks as one of the top "smells" of Disney, according to park employees, bloggers, and tourists alike. It's one of the scents that makes the Happiest Place on Earth so deeply memorable and immersive.
So where did those Imagineers probably start to pinpoint that perfect aroma? Orange essential oils.
Beyond just nostalgia, Orange essential oils have many uses. From baking and beverages to cleaning and beauty products, the uses for Orange essential oil are vast. It can be applied topically, diffused aromatically, as well as consumed safely.
Where Does Orange Essential Oil Come From?
While most essential oils come from their related plants, citrus essential oils (including lemon, grapefruit, and of course, orange) are extracted from the rinds of the fruit. According to Healthline, the orange essential oil is extracted from the rind of a sweet orange rather than mandarin or bitter oranges. The rind is cold-pressed, but the leaves and flowers from an orange plant can be used in addition to the fruit itself. (Click here to read more about different types of oranges!)
The Many Benefits of Orange Essential Oil
Studies have shown the positive effects of Orange essential oil on things like anxiety, fatigue, fighting infections, and even pain. It can also potentially lift your mood, reduce your stress, treat skin conditions like acne, reduce inflammation and associated pain, and perhaps even relieve upset stomachs.
One cool thing that was found when testing orange essential oil and its benefits was this study in 2012 when it was tested against E. coli isolates that have caused food poisoning and other related discomforts. Researchers found that percentages of the essential oil were able to inhibit the foodborne illness in cold (refrigerated) temperatures when applied at the surface level. Considering how awful food poisoning is, any potential to alleviate that experience is a positive find.
Another study targeted staph bacteria and found that small doses of orange essential oil managed to kill off the negative bacterial cells quickly without any negative or toxic effects on intentional cells (known as Keratinocyte Cell Culture Systems) used to treat skin generally as well as burn and wound patients.
