Lavender essential oil is often first to be recommended when it comes to drug-free ways of dealing with things like stress, anxiety, and trouble sleeping. Well, there's a reason for that!
Lavender is one of the most studied essential oils. One study found that inhaling lavender oil caused a significant decrease in blood pressure, heart rate, and skin temperature. The subjects in this study reported that they felt more active, fresher, and more relaxed. Theta and alpha brain waves were also found to increase in power in this group.
This particular finding is particularly interesting. Theta waves occur most often while we sleep or during deep meditation and are said to lower stress and anxiety as well as facilitate learning, healing, intuition, and growth. Alpha waves typically occur when we are focused but relaxed and aid in our ability to be in the present, calm, and alert.
In a 2015 study, lavender oil was effective as a pain reliever and anti-inflammatory. Another clinical trial found lavender to help lessen the severity of migraine pain.
Other studies have indicated that Lavender oil could be helpful for relieving pain and/or inflammation from things like
- Chronic Knee Pain
- Chronic Neck Pain
- Chronic Back Pain
- Postoperative Pain
- Post-Cesarean Section Pain
- Menstrual Pain
- Multiple Sclerosis
- General Chronic Pain
Lavender essential oil is also popular in beauty and skincare products for its calming effects, but also because of its ability to soothe irritated skin. You may commonly see lavender oil used for things like:
- Sunburn relief
- Razor burn relief
- Aromatherapy to help relax and reduce stress
- Aromatherapy to promote a good night’s sleep
- Perfume and air freshener
- To soothe irritated skin and sore muscles
This powerful essential oil certainly brings a lot to the table, and its anti-inflammatory and relaxing properties align perfectly with the pain-relieving and anti-inflammatory properties of DMSO.
